GIF Face Swap: Supported Files, Size Limits and Tips for Best Results

Oct 5, 2026

GIF face swap has a different set of constraints than photo or video face swap, because the AI has to process every frame of an animated loop consistently, not just one still image. This article covers the actual limits our tool enforces — not guesses — plus how to get a clean, natural-looking result.

The Actual File Limits

Pulled directly from our tool's validation rules:

RequirementLimit
Source file format.gif only
Source file sizeUp to 5MB
Face photo formatJPG, PNG, or WEBP
Face photo sizeUp to 5MB
Daily free generations (anonymous)3 per day, shared with photo and multiple-face swap modes

Unlike video face swap, there is no separate duration or frame-count cap enforced in our code for GIF mode — the only hard constraint is the 5MB file size. In practice, that size cap does most of the work: a longer or higher-resolution GIF simply takes up more space, so very long or very high-quality GIFs tend to hit the 5MB ceiling before they'd hit any separate frame limit.

If you need to swap faces in a video clip instead — MP4, MOV, or WEBM — that's a different mode with its own limits, covered in video face swap credits and limits.

How GIF Limits Compare to Photo and Video

ModeFile TypeMax SizeExtra LimitCost for Signed-In Users
PhotoJPG, PNG, WEBP5MB—1 credit
GIFGIF only5MB—8 credits
Multiple face swapJPG, PNG, WEBP5MB—2 credits
VideoMP4, MOV, WEBM20MB5 seconds max15 credits (min)

Note the split in how these two systems work: anonymous visitors draw from the shared 3-per-day free allowance across photo, GIF, and multiple-face swap. Signed-in users don't use that daily allowance at all — every generation, on any mode, draws from their credit balance instead, at the per-mode cost above. GIF sits between photo and video in cost: 8 credits per generation, versus 1 credit for a single photo and a 15-credit minimum for video, reflecting the extra work of processing an animated sequence frame-by-frame.

Credits are only deducted once a generation actually succeeds — a request blocked by the safety screen or a generic model failure doesn't consume any credit balance.

GIF Face Swap Uses a Different Model Than Video

It's worth knowing that GIF face swap and video face swap run on two entirely different underlying models in our system — GIF mode isn't just "video mode with a different file extension." That matters practically: settings and behavior that apply to our video pipeline don't automatically carry over to GIF mode, and vice versa. If you're comparing the two, treat them as separate tools with separate constraints rather than variants of the same thing.

What to Know Before You Start

A few things affect whether your GIF swap comes out clean:

  • Content safety screening. Both your source GIF and your face photo are checked before generation. See how the NSFW filter works for what it checks and what to do if a normal photo gets flagged.
  • The shared daily free allowance. GIF swap shares its 3-per-day anonymous allowance with photo and multiple-face swap — if you've already used your daily generations on photos, sign in to keep going on credits instead.
  • Face visibility across the loop. Because the model processes the whole animated sequence, a face that's small, angled away, or obscured for part of the loop is harder to track consistently than a face in a single still photo — see the GIF-specific tips below.

Tips Specific to GIFs

Keep the face visible across the loop, not just in one frame. Since the model processes the whole animated sequence, a face that disappears behind motion blur, another object, or a fast pan for part of the loop is harder to swap consistently than one that stays visible throughout.

Compress before you hit the 5MB wall. If your source GIF is close to or over 5MB, most GIF tools let you reduce the frame count, resolution, or color palette to bring it under the limit without a major visible quality loss.

Use a still, clear face photo — not another GIF — as your face source. The face photo must be a static JPG, PNG, or WEBP; you can't use an animated file as the replacement face.

Quick Checklist

  • Source file is .gif format, under 5MB
  • Face photo is JPG, PNG, or WEBP, under 5MB
  • Face stays visible for most of the loop, not just one frame
  • Haven't already used your 3 daily free generations on another mode
  • Content passes automated safety screening (see NSFW filter guide)
